FAQ

Pneumatic applications of sealants and adhesives use a compressed air pump to dispense the material, and electric systems use a motor-driven pump. Pneumatic systems may be faster but less precise for high-volume jobs, while electric systems add precision and control to detailed jobs like automotive manufacturing or EV battery construction.

Binks equipment is compatible with many medium and high-viscosity solutions such as lubricants, sealants, mastics, adhesives, epoxies, putties, and adhesives.

There is no single best way; the methodology should be dictated by the job and the surfaces you are looking to seal or bond. Continuous bead patterns are best for sealing joints and seams, while dotting works well in electronics and small part assembly. Spraying is widely used to apply thin layers of adhesives quickly or onto uneven substrates.

Sealants and adhesives typically take anywhere from a few hours to several days to fully cure. Material type and application thickness are critical determinants to curing speed. There are often three phases to drying and curing:

  1. The initial “skin over” where the top layer will feel dry to the touch
  2. The initial curing period (typically less than 24 hours) means the material can be handled but has not fully cured
  3. Full cure (up to 14 days) is when the material has reached optimal strength

When selecting dispensing equipment for sealants and adhesives, look for:

  • Dispensing pressure and flow rate
  • Material type compatibility
  • System type (pneumatic vs. electric)
  • Nozzle and tip design
  • Automation and integration capabilities
  • Temperature control
  • Maintenance and cleaning features
